Chapter 8
Closing my eyes makes it so much worse. I need to see what is happening. I want to see it coming so I know when it will be over.
Itâs like it happens in slow motion. The demon brings his arm down, sunlight glinting off his sharpened talons. They will easily slide through my flesh like itâs butter. It will be so easy for him.
His claws are barely an inch away from my neck. Iâm certain thatâs where he is aiming. Heâll hit the jugular and blood will go everywhere. Heâll enjoy watching the light drain out of me.
With only seconds to go, I close my eyes.
And wait.
Suddenly the weight is lifted from my body. Is this really what dying feels like? My neck seems okay, did my brain switch the pain off so I didnât have to endure it in my last moments on earth?
I open one eye.
And then the other.
Adelaide stands over me, holding her hand out. The demon who was sitting on me is now sprawled on the ground beside me. He is no longer moving. A short sword is clutched in the girlâs hand, now covered with black, thick blood.
âThanks,â I say as I accept her hand and stand up. My legs are shaking from the whole experience. My shoulder burns from the awkward position it was underneath me.
Adelaide smiles. âCouldnât let the only person who knows how to cook get away. What would we eat then?â
I want to laugh but canât even find enough strength for that. My next thought immediately jumps to Jesse. He is slumped against a wall, bracing his hands on his knees to stay upright.
I immediately go to him. âAre you okay?â
He looks up and our eyes lock for a moment. Heâs in pain but I canât see any bleeding wounds. He clutches at his chest. âCopped a good one,â he says.
âWhat can I do to help? Can you keep going?â Staying still in the middle of all this could be a death sentence. A fact Iâm sure he is all too aware of.
Jesse takes a few deep breaths. âYeah, Iâll be fine. Just need a minute.â
Adelaide takes a canteen from her belt and offers it to him. âHere, have some water. It might help.â He accepts it and takes a few sips.
The color slowly returns to his ashen face. âThanks. I thought the demon had me just then. You saved my life.â
Apparently, I wasnât the only one. âMine too. You didnât tell me you were such a badass.â
Adelaide shrugs. âA girlâs gotta do what a girlâs gotta do. You can thank me later. Right now, we have to kick some more demon butt.â
We couldnât argue with that.
The second Jesse catches his breath, we are off again. We have to cross one more courtyard before we reach the classrooms. Adelaide comes with us, the three of us watching one anotherâs backs.
The demons keep coming for us. Over and over again. Fighting them off is getting harder as our limbs start to get fatigued.
